“Follow me” he said. And there we were, in the middle of a field up to our knees in water. We could see the track and hear the bikes but do you think we could get there. The answer – No.
On the way back it was time to sample some of the Assen larger. Horrible stuff but the more you drank the better it got. After six pints it was time to eat. It was back to the campsite and quick change. It was obvious that Assen is never that busy because it felt like we were waiting for the taxi for over an hour. A bit of advice if you ever decide to go to the World Superbikes in September – Take a jumper. It was freezing. We ended up in a small Chinese restaurant and topped up on our beer level. The food was first class. Stuffed with food and drink, we made our way into the square were we enjoyed the live music and nutters doing burnout’s. The atmosphere was brilliant. The beer was flowing, we had live music and best of all, there were patio heaters all over the place. The drinking went on throughout the night. I say throughout the night, what I really mean is that we were drinking until they turned the patio heaters off.
Next morning it was time to go to the racetrack. We took no chances and went the opposite way to what Dai said. We found it. What a day. The beer was flowing, the weather was okay and the racing was brilliant. The great thing about the Assen track is that it could be raining at one end and dry at the other. Fortunately we were at the dry end.
After the racing we just weren’t thinking straight. Paul was the first over the fence and what a laugh that was. The fence decided to catapult him off but wanted to keep hold of his shorts tearing a big hole.
Over the track we went and there we were right in the middle of it. The Superbikes, the Superbike riders and the Superbike dolly birds. The camera was working overtime. We met up with Colin Edwards, Troy Corser, Tadayuki Okada, Ruben Xaus, Peter Goddard and Supersports Karl Muggeridge. They were all great and the only let down was Troy Bayliss who could not even spare two minutes for a photo shoot.
